About Rockport

Rockport-Fulton is as much a state of mind as it is a vacation paradise.  Nestled among ancient, windswept oaks and surrounded by Aransas and Copano Bays, this unique area has a lot to offer.  It was designated as one of the top ten places to retire, has a Blue Wave Beach, is one of the top places to birdwatch in the United States, is a mecca of artists and art galleries, and is home to the best fishing along the Texas Coast.  If you come for a weekend or a week, you will definitely "fall in love" with this community and want to come back to visit or to live.  It is one of the most desirable coastal towns anywhere along the Texas Gulf Coast.  You can fish, sail, kayak, bird watch, go to the Texas Maritime museum, visit the Rockport Aquarium, see an historic mansion, gasp at the size of the Big Tree, walk the many gorgeous hike and bike trails, lounge or play volleyball on the beach, roll around the Skate Park, relax and eat at the many excellent restaurants in the area, or shop until you drop.

There are more than 50 different things to do!

Here are some of the highlights:

The Blue Wave campaign is America’s first environmental certification for beaches. The goal of Blue Wave is to promote public awareness and voluntary participation in maintaining clean and healthy beaches.  Our Blue Wave beach is litter free, is handicap accessible, has public restroom facilities, picnic sites, children play areas, swimming, fishing, public boat ramp and is a bird sanctuary.

The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 to protect the vanishing wildlife of coastal Texas. It is an ever-changing land and is still being shaped by the waters and storms of the Gulf of Mexico. This 70,504-acre refuge is made up of the Blackjack Peninsula, named for its scattered blackjack oaks, and three satellite units. Grasslands, live oaks, and redbay thickets cover deep, sandy soils.

From the Gulf of Mexico to beaches, bays and estuaries and inland woods, prairies and fields, one will find extraordinary birding throughout the Rockport-Fulton area. From November to March, the world's only migrating flock of over 265 Whooping Cranes calls the Aransas Wildlife Refuge home. Nowhere else can you view these magnificent birds so closely.

Rising above the Aransas Bay and surrounded by stately live oaks, Fulton Mansion State Historic Site is located in the resort area of Rockport-Fulton. The house must have appeared incredible in 1877, as it does today, arshes and broken by long, narrow ponds, Aransas is home for cranes, alligators, deer, and many other species of wildlife.

Rockport-Fulton is one of the most unique coastal art communities in the United States.  Aransas County has been an Art Colony since the late 1800's, with over 300 artists living here today.

Goose Island State Park, 321.4 acres, surrounded by the St. Charles and Aransas Bays, is located north of Rockport in Aransas County. The "Big Tree" named State Champion Coastal Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) in 1969, is thought to be one of the largest in the nation. Estimated to be over 1000 years old, the "Big Tree" has a circumference of 35 feet, is 44 feet in height and has a crown spread of 90 feet.
